Daniel Agger is that kind of a central
defender, who allows Liverpool to build the game up from the back. He is also a
good striker of the ball, and his presence has brought the life and belief back
into the team.
Agger is known as "a fine reader of the
game, comfortable on the ball and blessed with a ferocious shot." The Liverpool fans have created a song for him to the tune of Agadoo.
In the winter of 2006, Agger joined Liverpool
from Brondby IF for a sum of £6 Million becoming the most expensive Dane and
the then most expensive defender at Liverpool. He made his debut against
Birmingham City on February 1st, though injuries meant that most of
the season was spent on the sidelines.
In 2006-07, Agger was drafted into starting XI
and saw him become the PFA player of the month for September. A 35-yard belter did
no harm to the Dane, and even won the LFC TV’s goal of the season.
The highlight of his 1st full season
came in Champions League semi-final 2nd leg against Chelsea, when
his left-foot strike brought Liverpool back into the hunt and took the game to
penalties. He went onto play the full 90 minutes in the final of the same
tournament, which, Liverpool lost to AC Milan.
Injuries played a major hand over the course of
the next few season for Agger which disrupted his ability to help Liverpool’s
fortunes.
He was selected for Denmark for his 1st
major international tournament in 2010, for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
But, then Denmark didn’t go past the group stages.
In 2011-12 season, he almost became a permanent
name on the team sheets and he formed a very strong partnership with Slovakian
Martin Skrtel. Their partnership helped Liverpool lift the Carling Cup in February
2012 and earn his with a medal.
Later in the same year, Agger went onto captain
the Danish side that went for European Championships in Poland – Ukraine and played
a major role in Denmark’s upset win over The Netherlands.
