Glen Johnson arrived at Anfield in August 2009
from the then relegated Portsmouth. He had by then established himself as an
attacking right-back and also was a part of England national team.
He started with Harry Redknapp at West Ham
United before he was loaned out to Millwall. Later, he became the 1st
signing at Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea in 2003.
His Chelsea debut came in August of the same
year at Anfield. Three months later, in an international fixture against Denmark,
he marked his debut, when he came on for Gary Neville.
He tasted both Premier League and League Cup
victories during his tenure at Chelsea, but was later loaned out to Portsmouth
in 2006 by Jose Mourinho. A year later, the deal was made permanent and he went
on to become a major hit among Fratton Park faithful.
He was part of the Portsmouth side that won the
FA Cup in 2008 and despite finishing in 14th position in the league
a year later in 2008-09, the full back was a part of the PFA Team of the Year.
Then came is big-money move to Merseyside. His debut
came on August 16, 2009 at White Hart Lane and his first goal, a thundering
volley, came three days later in a 4-0 thrashing of Stoke City.
He started in every game when he was selected
for the 2010 FIFA World Cup before England crashed out in the round of 16 to
Germany, yet again.
Injuries cut short his 2010-11 season, but
still, the attacking and defensive sides of his game was top draw.
In February 2012, our No.2's consistency
was rewarded with a first medal for the club. Having started the Carling Cup
final against Cardiff at Wembley, Johnson kept his nerve to score from 12 yards
as Liverpool clinched a shoot-out win.
A
few months later he travelled to Poland and Ukraine for Euro 2012, where he
started all four games as England reached the quarter-finals before a
penalties loss to Italy.
Away
from the pitch, the defender established the 'Glen Johnson Soccer
School' in Dartford back in 2007 for children aged between four and 16.
