Martin Skrtel joined Liverpool in 2008 with the
reputation of being a no-nonsense defender and he hasn’t disappointed. Now, he
is considered as one of the best central defenders in Europe, if not the world.
The Reds signed Skrtel from FC Zenit St. Petersburg, when he reportedly got interests from Valencia, Everton and Tottenham Hotspurs.
He made his debut for Liverpool on 21st January 2008 against Aston Villa, when he came on as a second-half sub.
Skrtel arrived at Anfield following a regressive
search initiated by Rafael Benitez, the then Liverpool manager, as a defensive
cover and had to fight with the likes of Sami Hyypia, Jamie Carragher and Daniel
Agger for a place in the team.
Over the years, he had made good solid partnerships with Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger.
He was part of the Slovakian side that went for FIFA World Cup in 2010 and he featured in every match till their round of 16 exit to Holland.
The central defender played every minute of every game in the 2010-11 campaign and his performances in 2011-12 made him a regular starter alongside Daniel Agger. His performances made sure that he was a comfortable winner when it came to the club’s end of season poll.
In February 2012, Skrtel colleted his 1st medal when his 2nd half strike took Liverpool to extra time en route to winning the Carling Cup final against Cardiff City.
